As a child, most believe in anything. I don't know who--or how many people, for that matter--said that, but they obviously never met me. Well, here goes nothing. I bounded lightly up the stairs Christmas morning, trying to hide my disappointment at not getting what I'd asked for. I sat in my room for a minute, sifting through what I did get, until my father walked into my room. "Rosie? What are you doing in here all by yourself?" my father looked at me with warm eyes and a kind smile. Forgetting myself in his eyes for a moment, I smiled back at him and giggled. "I'm looking through all my presents!" I tried to sound as bubbly as possible, but my father saw right through me. "Tell you what," he told me after offering a sad smile, "I'm going to the office to get some papers; I'll pick something nice up for you on the way back." "Really? Thank you, Daddy!" My eyes sparkled as he pulled me into a bear hug. "I'll see you later, Rosie," he told me just before kissing my forehead. "I'll try to be back soon." "Bye, Daddy!" I waved him goodbye. After he left, I sat on the porch and waited for him to return. And waited. For hours. "Rosie, what are you still doing out there? Come inside, dinner's ready," my mother called out. "But... Daddy said he'd be right back...." My bubbliness had all gone sober. She looked with worried eyes at the driveway, then reassured me: "Daddy told me he might be a while. Why don't you come in, dear, you'll get cold." Disheartened, I followed her suggestion. We ate dinner that night in somber silence. We both knew something wasn't right. I felt an odd presence at the table, too, and it seemed that everywhere I looked, I could only see his face. I didn't eat much that night. Neither did Mom. She sent me off to bed when it started getting late. I stayed up, waiting for a car to pull into the driveway, or a phone to ring. Something. Around 12:45, as I was almost drifting to sleep, the phone suddenly rang. My mother picked it up quickly. She said a few things I couldn't hear, then I heard a clear sentence: "Oh my, God." Feet pounded quickly up the stairs after I heard Mom hang up, and she appeared in my room, tears in her eyes. "Rosie... your father.... We need to go. Now." A terrifying car ride later, and I found out that he'd been hit by a drunk driver. Being 6 years old, I had no idea what that meant. I don't so much remember the funeral or anything like that; the memories of my mother crying and not eating for days at a time are more clear to me. After they'd cleared all the wreckage, they came to our house one afternoon saying they had a package for me, supposedly from my father. Shaking with tears, I opened it to find my Christmas present. The stuffed animal bunny I'd asked for.

oh... my... god... this may be the most awesome thing youve ever done for me. no lie. but i dont understand... if im ruining your summer, why spread my writing around..? what are you trying to tell me?
