A Farewell to Arms refers to a true event in Hemingway's life. When Hemingway was in World War I, he got hurt and met a doctor at a hospital in Milan. He fell in love with her, but sadly, she left him.
A Farewell To Arms:Connecting the Dots
In A Farewell to Arms, Lieutenant Frederic Henry falls in love with the lovely Catherine Barkley. At first, Frederic pretends to love Catherine, but throughout his stay in the hospital (after he was hurt in battle) he falls in love with Catherine. They end up getting married and Catherine is pregnant. To finish the book, the child and Catherine die. Poor Frederic doesn't even get the chance to say goodbye! Many of Hemingway's books are autobiographical, and this one is no exception. Like Frederic, Hemingway also falls in love with a nurse during the war. Agnes was her name, and she worked as a nurse in a hospital in Milan just like Catherine. Hemingway fell in love with Agnes during his stay at the hospital after being hurt in World War I. Agnes, unlike Catherine, left Hemingway for another Italian officer. A Farewell to Arms is, in my opinion, Hemingway's way of continuing their relationship, and ending it on his terms. He takes "till death do us part" a little too seriously for my taste!
I am MACHO- MAN!!!! a.k.a. Ernest Hemingway.
Say "Farewell" to your favorite book because it's being replaced!
