The theme of the book Their Eyes Were Watching God is about a person that struggles at first to get her voice on top and to be in charge of her ownself while learning what love is.
"It must have been the way Joe spoke out without giving her a chance to say anything one way or another that took the bloom off of things. But anyway, she went down the road behind him that night feeling cold...'' (pg.41)
''She was just basking in freedom for the most part without the need for thought....'' 'Tain't dat ah worries over Joe's death, Phoeby. Ah jus' loves dis freedom.'' (pg.41)
In the book Their Eyes Were Watching God there was a lot of foreshadowing. One part in the book was when Tea Cake stole Janie's $200 from her skirt when she was asleep. He used that money to gamble. That showed that Tea Cake was starting to be some trouble. Later on Tea Cake started gambling lots of money and at times didn't even return back home. This caused some problems with Janie. She started wondering whether Tea Cake married her for money or love. She was older then him by more than 12 years so that therory was really important.
Courageous
Powerful
A foil in the book is between Joe and Tea Cake. Joe is a rich, smart man who didn't treat Janie with much respect, and looked down on her. On the other hand Tea Cake is a poor, not so bright man that treats Jane with lots of respect. He makes Janie feel strong and makes her feel equal with him. Joe is more aggressive towards Janie and hits her at times while Tea Cake hasn't hurt her and only defends himself by putting his hands up to protect himself and to hold Janies hands back when she gets aggressive towards him.
Faithful
Lonely
Strong
A dynamic character in the book is Janie. Throught the story Janie goes through a lot of hard situations. She changed alot since she lived with her grandmother to when she became a widow. Throughout the first couple of years in her life she was a women who had no control over herself. When she was with Joe he told her how to wear her hair so no man could touch or see it and he would tell her not to speck to people and play checkers with them. Then when Joe died Janie let her hair down to show that no was in charge of her and that she could do what ever she pleased to do. Later when Tea Cake came into the picture Janie could still be in charge of herself without having Tea Cake telling her what to do. So throughout this book Janie has had the most attitude changes thought her life.
''Ah wants things sweet wid mah marriage lak when you sit under a pear tree and think. Ah…'' (pg. 23)
