Vlad III was a Romanian prince in the period of the Holy Roman Empire. Protecting the empire from muslim invaders, he lived a life of constant struggle fighting against the Ottoman Turks to the east. He also led a very traumatic life. His father and brother will killed by unfaithful nobles of his own kingdom, Wallachia, and he was kidnapped by the Turks at an early age. He grew up to be known as the Impaler because of his notorious way of torture. He would impale people upon large stakes where they would slowly die.
Bram Stoker's fictional character, Count Dracula, was based on Vlad Dracula himself.
Ten Facts
1) On St. Bartholomew's Day, Vlad III was unhappy with merchants and nobles in his kingdom, so he had 30,000 of them impaled. 2) Dracula's younger brother allied with the Turks and ran against him for rule of the Wallachian throne. 3) Dracula's older brother was buried alive by unfaithful nobles. 4) While retreating from Turks, Dracula's wife jumped off a castle tower, killing herself, rather than submitting to their enemy. 5) While Vlad spent time in jail, he was known to capture small rodents and impale them on sticks.
6) Once while retreating from an enemy, Vlad had burned down every town of his own kingdom that was in his path to assure that the enemy would not have any food or drink on the way. 7) Vlad once used his ways of torture as a defense method, he had set up so many impaled turks outside of Wallachia that when the soldiers came upon it, they were too frightened to move on and headed home. 8) Dracula would impale people of different classes or ranks at different heights to show no one was above his rule 9) Dracula would often arrange impalement stakes in geometric patterns. 10) One easter, Vlad invited unloyal nobles over for dinner and afterwards had them all impaled or sent away to build his new castle.
