Poe launched his career with "The Raven" and traveled around the country reading it. He published "The Philosophy of Composition" which describes how Poe wrote the poem. It is 108 lines which is close to 100 which he said is the ideal length for a poem. It has 18 stanzas, five octometer lines, and a tetrameter refrain. It begins with the narrator morning for his lost love "Lenore". He is isolated in his home one night when he hears somebody at his door. It is a raven perched on a bust of Homer, who represents wisdom. Poe uses a talking raven to create a melancholy effect and all it says is "nevermore". It is said to be "demonic" or self grieving. It has haunted readers since it was written and is full of mystery. Poe went on to be the father of horror and write many more famous mysterious poems.
