The western schism was a divide in church power. there were two popes, a french and an italian. Each pope excommunicated with the other. he was the son of clovis, the man who created the frankish kingdom. Charlemagne took the throne in 768 and strengthened the kingdom. He felt that learning was extremely important which eventually led to ''Illuminated Manuscripts'' made by monks. He was a hardy warrior and took part in 54 campaigns to expand his kingdom.
