The Goldilocks Planet
Problems
- Scientists have discovered a planet about 20 light years away. - It is called Gliese 581-g, but it is nicknamed the Goldilocks Planet because the tempertaure is just right for life. - The planet orbits a star called Gliese 581. - The entire Gliese 581 solar system would fit inside Earths orbit
Topic Information
- Gliese 581-g is the right distance from its star to have liquid water, but there is no evidence it actually does. - 20 light years isn't very far compared to other solar systems, but we are still far away from finding a way to travel at the speed of light. - Because its star is so small it has to be much closer to it than we have to be to our sun.
Solutions
- Send an unmanned spacecraft to the planet. to search for water and life. - Take a picture of Gliese 581-g with the Hubble Space Telescope.
- A space shuttle with present day technology would take over 100,000 years to reach Gliese 581-g. - Because Gliese 581-g is so close to its star, a picture of it would be very bright and blurry.
Problems with the solutions
A space shuttle would take a very long time to get to the planet and any pictures would be to out of focus and bright to present any useful pictures of its terrain. So the only solution would be to wait until a faster form of space travel is invented.
