The Prison
In the Scarlet Letter, the prison represents many things such as in the first chapter when Hawthorne describes the prison as the ''black flower of civilized society.'' The prison in this sense, represents the crime and punishment that was used in the early puritan life.
At the end of the book, Hawthorne shows the tombstone which represents the end of crime and punishment in civilization. The prison also represents how bad civilization was when he shows the dying weeds on the side of the prison.
The movie ''The Green Mile'' relates to the prison because it deals with crime and punishment in civilization and how people have to deal with society.
The movie''Escape from Alcatraz'' deals with a prison and also shows how people in prison were treated and how society viewed them. Just like how Hester Prynne was viewed in her society.
During the Salem witch trials, prisons were a big part. A child names Dorcas was accused of being a witch and spent most of her life in a terrible prison where she was poorly treated. When she got out of prison she was in such a bad mental state that she had to have a supervisor at all times. Society treated her like an outcast for her whole life which is how society treated Hester when she first got out of prison.
