King Louis XIII
Louis XIII was the son of the famous Henry IV of Navarre and Marie de’ Medici. He was born in Fountainebleau, France on September 16, 1601. Louis childhood can only be explained as rough, as he grew up with no parents. Louis mother was a devout catholic, while Louis father was a protestant who switched over to Catholicism for the good of the French people. This created a difficult religious situation for Louis because he needed to choose a religion in which he wanted to guide France. Ultimately he would choose Catholicism. In 1610, when Louis was merely nine years old, Henry IV was stabbed to death, leaving Louis as the eldest male heir to the French throne. Now that his father was dead, Louis reign of power formally began. Because he was technically a minor, “France was governed by a regent” (Trueman, “Louis XIII of France”). Louis’ ambitious mother, Marie de’ Medici, was one of the rulers of this regency. Marie allowed a few of her advisors to rule along with her, but she was intent on reversing all the hard work Henry had put into against the Austrians. Instead, Marie wanted to bring “France into alliance with Spain and the Austrian house” (Classic Encyclopedia, “Louis XIII”). Once Louis became old enough to rule, he took over, and was mainly guided by Cardinal Richelieu though he had plenty of other influences as well. Overall, Louis XIII led a more short life but dealt with a very hard political time in which there was much war and strife over the divided religions in France.
