"Brave Little Ruby"
Ruby Bridges
She went to an all white school and because of that, lots of people wrote to Ruby. Even Eleanor Roosevelt did! Ruby's mother even kept it. A whole bunch came, but they didn't survive. In 1965, a huge hurricane named Betsy flooded parts of New Orleans. Mrs. Roosevelt's letter had got lost in that flood, but that wasn't the only thing that had gotten lost. Ruby's father had lost his Purple Heart in the flood too!
After graduating from high school, she remembered wanting to go to collage. Her mother thought the doors would automatically open.
Q1: Why did Ruby go to an all white school?
Q3: What were some ways people protested at Ruby?
Q2: What was Ruby's goal?
A1: Her mother felt strongly that the move was needed not only to give her own daughter a better education, but to "take this step forward ... for all African-American children.A2: To change the education system for her school, so that everyone would be treated equally. Also, so that one day, there would not be any more segregation laws anywhere in the world.A3: Every morning, as Bridges walked to school, one woman would threaten to poison her, another woman at the school put a black baby doll in a wooden coffin and protested with it, and white parents went in and brought their own children out of the school. A4: Ruby Bridges, now Ruby Bridges Hall, still lives in New Orleans. For 15 years she worked as a travel agent, later becoming a full-time parent. She is now chair of the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which she formed in 1999 to promote "the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences". Describing the mission of the group, she says, "racism is a grown-up disease and we must stop using our children to spread it."
As an adult, Ruby has 4 kids. 2 of them are named Sean and Craig.
I now know that experience comes to us for a purpose, and if we follow the guidance of the spirit within us, we will probably find that the purpose is a good one.
Happy Birthday! Ruby was born September 8, 1954. Also, she is 56 years old.
