In Columbus' time, they used what is called celestial navigation. This technique uses the position of the Sun and the stars in the sky, as well as understanding that the Earth is actually a sphere and not flat.

His widely published report of his voyage of 1492 made Columbus famous through out Europe and secured for him the title of Admiral of the Ocean Sea and further royal patronage.

He was born in the Republic of Genoa, Italy in 1451. He died on May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Spain.
