The History of The City Tavern
'' The City Tavern would be a familiar sight to the leading figures of the American Revolution.''
The Tavern went through many changes after being affected by the war. Hotels started to become more and more popular causing the the City Tavern to lose some of it's ''prominence'' in the city. Starting to serve as the Merchant'sExchange caused it to become forgetten, eventually the building was demolished in 1854 because of a fire that partially damaged it in 1834. Until 1948 the Tavern was basically forgotten, congress decided, because of it's importance, that a replica was to be built. The construction of the building was complete in 1976, just before the Bicentennial celebration. In July of 1994 Walter Staib took over The City Tavern and devoted it to give customers a sense of what it was like back then with it's cuisine and atmosphere.
''The Tavern was built ''for the convenience and credit of the city'' by a group of eminent Philadelphians who felt that their hometown deserved a fine tavern which reflected its status as the largest, most cosmopolitan city in British North America. When the Tavern was completed in 1773, it was one of the most elegant buildings in the city.'' The Tavern wasn't only a place to dine and socialize, it was also a place for city meetings.
