1772-1773 Originally constructed by subscription in 1772 and completed in 1773. Prominent subscribers included Gov. John Penn, John Dickenson and Benjamin Chew. 1774-1777 The Tavern was the unofficial meeting place for the first Continental Congress, late summer of 1774. Late 1700's Durring the late 1700's and early 1800's, the City Tavern was the dining and gather place for notables as George Washington and foreign diplomats. 1834 March 22, 1834, the City Tavern was partially destroyed by fire, and in 1854 so original structure was completely demolished. 1948 Congress commissioned the historically accurate reconstruction of the City Tavern 1976 After many years of research and development, the replica of the City Tavern was completed just in time for the Bicentennial. 1994 Walter Stalib took over as operator of the Tavern and has faithfully recreated the cuisine, ambiance,and experience unique to 18th Century America.
