Peter the Great When Peter first started ruling he shared the thrown with his half- brother. In 1696 he became a solo ruler. He became to be known as Peter the Great, because he was one of Russia’s greatest reformers. He continued the trend of increasing the czar’s power. In 1697 just one year after he became a solo ruler he embarked on the “Grand Embassy”. The "Grand Embassy" is a long visit to Western Europe. Peter had many reforms some of which include bringing the Russian Orthodox Church under state control. Peter reduced power of the landowners. Peter also modernized the army. Peter's main goal was modernization Peter attempted to westernize Russia. He introduced the potatoes. He started Russia's first newspaper and edited it himself. Peter raised womens status. He advanced education and did many other great things.
