After Gerald Ford's presidency he retired to Rancho Mirage, California. He continued to be a speaker in public and also wrote a couple of books. His enjoyment in playing golf didn't change however. In addition, he served on serveral boards and commisions. In August 1999 Ford was awarded Ford the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. A few years later he died at his home in California. due to old age and heart failure

Gerald Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 14, 1913. During his high school and college years Ford was interested in economics and football. After graduating he was offered a contract by the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, turning them down to go into law. In 1935 he became an assistant football coach at Yale. A few years later he opened a law practice with a friend, Philip Buchen. He also enlisted and served four years in the U.S. Navy. Then he married Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Bloomer and began his career in politics.

Ford signed the Federal Election Campaign Act Amendments of 1`974 on October 15, this is to control campaign fundraising and spending. In 1974 Ford visited several other countries, this being the first time Japan was visited by an American President. On October 17, 1974 Ford vetoed the Freedom of Information Act Amendments, Congress later made the bill law, overriding his veto.
