Dear Keller ISD Board of Education, Students have recently been informed of the current money issues, and how the elimination of certain classes may occur. As a student, the thought of having the option to take a class removed, hinders the further success of knowledge and skills needed for future goals. Taking classes such as, art, music, or theater away, removes classes that help students express who they are. With these classes eliminated from student’s schedules, how would that affect student’s goals? Students need classes that help with motor skills or other undeveloped skills that core classes do not help create. Elective classes provide students with the option to improve their social skills, become more outgoing, and develop a personality for their self. Many adults believe that these classes are a waste of time and money, but they do not see what a student sees or feels when taking a class like this. Students feel these classes help them grow towards, a better life and a better future. In art, music, and theater students can express themselves in several ways that are acceptable for a student to act. Adults dislike the way we dress or the music preferences we have, but in reality students are just trying to figure out who they are. Music and clothing are only some examples of how teenagers express themselves, others are by the friends they are involved with or through poetry. These are easy ways for a student to show people who they really are. Almost all classes have a purpose for a student, whether it deals with developing skills, expressing themselves, or their career choice. No matter what the reason is for taking a class, each student their own reason or preference for the class. Sebastian Jackson who is a senior at Central High School says, “I am in two computer classes, so that I can improve at animation and graphic design for my future career in game design.” Students want to work to improve their knowledge and skills, if they are provided with the opportunities they will take them. For example, I enjoy taking science classes and art to help me achieve my goals of being a vet and better myself at a hobby of mine, which is art. With that being said, students do not always take a class because they want to or have to, but for us to have a brighter and better prospective of our future careers. Although art, music, and theater are just some of the classes mentioned, there are several other classes that could be removed from student’s schedules. Elective classes are meant to help students choose what they would like to do later in life. If these options were eliminated, how would a student gain interest in a career choice or major for college? High school is a time for students to learn what they are good at and to test out different classes. Due to the reasons listed above, I strongly disagree with the removal of classes to save money. I realize money is an issue, which could cause a problem for the proper functioning of a class. Instead of removing classes, maybe our district could help cut back on certain materials needed or the amount of expensive activities, in which the class includes.
