The priests were an important part of life in the Middle ages. You would meet them every sunday at church and they taught sunday school. The priest was a person to talk to. He listened to confessions and gave advice on how you should live your life. The priest met his parishioners on ordinary, work days, and even on holidays. The Bishop was a much more prominent member of the clergy than the ordinary country priest. Priests and bishops made their living from the tithes, that were paid by the peasants. A tenth of the crops and a tenth of the meat was to be given to the church. The money which belonged to the church was used to buy books, candles, and repairs.
In the Middle Ages Monastic life was based on rules St. Benedict made in the sixth century. The monks were known as Benedictines and had to take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The monks were told to perform manual task and were not aloud to own property, leave the monastery, or become envolved with problems in there society. Tasks were done in silence. Monks and nuns, who lived in convents, provided for the poor members of the community to help and care for them. Monasteries and nunneries were safe havens for pilgrims and other travelers. Monks went to church eight times a day to worship with songs, chanting, and prayers. Between prayers, the monks read or copied religious texts and music. Monks were often well educated and devoted their lives to writing and learning. The Venerable Bede, an English Benedictine monk who was born in the seventh century, wrote histories and books on science and religion.
