Basic Facts -On the peninsula of Attica. -The first democratic civilization. -One of the more prosperous societys.
Change of Powers Athens started off as a monarchy but during the seventh century the aristocrats took over. They ruled using a council of nobles which were assisted by nine archins, officials. At the end of that century Athens was faced with a big economic crisis when farmers were being sold as slaves because they couldn't pay back their loans.To fix the economy Solon became the sole archon and helped the Athenians by canceling debts, freed the slaves, and banned new loans. He failed to fix the main cause of the fall but no one really noticed becasue during that same time Athens grew industrily...
... Solon's rule eventually led to tyranny and was then overthrown by another aristocrat named Pisistratus. Pisistratus was big on trade and foreign policy. Eventually the people rebelled against his tyranny and a new aristocratic reformer, Cleisthenes, was put in charge. His reforms brought more central power to the citizens and became the foundations for democracy.
Basic Facts -Located in southwestern Peloponnesus. -The Spartans were based and known for their Military. - The government was an oligarchy.
Greece Divided
History Sparta was faced with a need for more land so they conquered Laconians and Messenia in 730 BCE. Both the Laconians and the Messenians were made into helots, slaves, after their capture and were forced to work for the Spartans.
Reform Rules At age seven boys were taken away from their mothers and put into military barracks where they were taught authority obedience and military training, When they turned twenty the boys were enrolled in the army and were allowed to get married. Then at age thirty a boy was allowed to move back home but had to stay in the service until he turned sixty.
Women In Sparta women were more equal to men. Since they were away at the military barracks the women got more freedom in their households and they got to exercise and play games unlike other Greek women.
Women The women of Athens were property of their husbands and had very little to no power in politics. Their main purpose was to bare children and do measly jobs like spinning and weaving.
