Voltaire
Francois Marie Arouet is one of the best known figures for many things during the Era of Enlightenment. Voltaire was very big on speaking his mind against the government for being corrupt and unreliable. He fought for civil rights, the right to a fair trial...
Against his father's wishes for him to be a lawyer Voltaire was widely known as a great writer. He produced many plays, poems, essays, novels, and letters. One of his first works, Henriade, is a French epic poem in honor of Henry IV. His Philosophical Dictionary is not about philosophy at alll but more of an encyclopedia dictionary on many of the big themes (mainly injustices) during the 18th century.
Voltaire considered himself a deist, believing that there was a higher being and the universe was based on reason and natural forces. He used Chinese philosophies to heavily criticize the Catholic Church and on being opressive and greedy. Besides Christians, Voltaire also attacked Jews and their "false prophet" [although some people believe he was attacking Christians through Jews].
...and the freedom of religion. He also was a huge driving force of Newtonian physics and agreed with Locke's ideas on philosophy. Due to his outspoken habits Voltaire spent many years imprisoned and in exile.
''Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.''
