Negative Impacts: Lumber Harvesting
Waterwheels like this were developed in the wid to late 1800s as a more advanced and efficent form of water energy harnessing.
This turbine, the Gorlov turbine, could power all of San Francisco is a line of them were placed underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
This turbine, though only a graphic, is a model of what many scientists are developing.
The water mill is still used in some areas, but modern water energy harnessers, called turbines, are being developed.
Water Energy: Transitions throughout History
One of the very first surviving pictures of a water wheeel.
Ireland cut down most of it's trees in the early days of the country. In the 17th through 19th century the harvesting of forests for the producing of power was at an all time high. Today, Ireland is only able to produce 55% of the wood it needs. Forests cover only 7% of the land, normal countries in is in the 30%'s and above.
This water wheel could power one small mill.
Forest used to cover 80% of the land in Scotland 2000 years ago, but after wars other countries would cut trees down for their own countries benifit. Due to this ravishing of the wildlife, by the early 20th century forests covered only 5% of the land.
Almost every country on the planet suffers from deforestation in some way or another. The ancient damage caused from unawareness and desperation. cripples countries even today.
