Family History George Washington was the oldest son of Augustine and Mary Ball Washington. Augustine went to a school in England and had the luck of seafaring life, then life progressed and everything settled so he managed growing his Virginia Estates. George Washington's great-grandfather owned more than 5,000 acres of land. George went to school for seven or eight years and his favorite subject was arithmeitic. When George was only eleven years old his father had passed away. So George helped his mom with the plantation. At sixteen years old he lived with his half brother Lawrence. George then married widow Martha Custis. George and Martha did not have children but they raised Martha's two children John and Martha. After the war John passed away and George and Martha adopted two of their grandchildren.
Presidential Accomplisments Many of his standards are still used by our government today. For example he relied on his cabinet. Generally presidents choose their cabinets, but George Washington chose a successor for Chief Justice, John Jay. John Jay was from outside the bench instead of basing everything on seniority. Washington was able to stop his first real challenge. Pennsylvanian farmers had been refusing to pay taxes so he sent some troops to ensure this complication and get the money. He declared the proclamation of Neutrality in 1793. Washington signed Jay's treaty which gave the United States right to Neutrality of the seas. this allows British to search and seize anything found on American ships. only if the ships were traveling into ports of Britian's emenies. In 1798, he signed the Pickney's treaty. It helped with Spain by puttinga boundary between the United States and Spanish held Florida.

At Mount Vernon he would be enjoying his favorite occupation, agriculture. He also would be spending a lot more time helping his wife raise their two grandchildren. Washington only enjoyed less then three years of retirement at Mount Vernon because of his sudden death.
