Thomas Paine
1. Born: Jan.29,1737 2. On Jan. 10, 1776, Thomas published Common Sense, a strong defense of American Independence from England. 3. "These are the times that try men's souls". Paine made the point that a person would no longer allow themselves to be oppressed through the unfairness of such an evil kingdom as the British monarchy. 4. The Crisis inspired hope to the soldiers and also to remind them of what they were fighting for: freedom. 5. Paine believed that America would form a system of government and that America could not be conquered. 6. Paine continued to write the Crisis until a peace treaty was signed ending the war. 7. Thomas believed strongly in the American cause, and although Thomas was very poor, he said taking money for writing his essays would take away from their worth. 8. Common Sense was one of Thomas Paine's best-selling works of the 18th century. 9. About 120,000 copies of common sense have been distributed throughout the colonies in three months. 10. Died: June 8,1809
