SECTION 9-1
GLYCOLYSIS
FERMENTATION
Glycolysis is the process in which one molecule of glucose is broken in half, producing two molecules of pyruvic acid, a 3-carbon compound. The first process of cellular respiration, is glycolysis
The two main types of fermentation are alcoholic fermentation and lactic acid fermentation. Fermentation in anaerobic which means it does not require oxygen. alcoholic occurs when making bread in yeast, and lactic acid fermentation occurs in muscles.
SECTION 9-2
The Krebs cycle is named after Hans Krebs, the British biochemist who demonstrated its existence in 1937. During the Krebs cycle, pyruvic acid is broken down into carbon dioxide in a series of energy-extracting reactions. Because citric acid is the first compound formed in this series of reactions, the Krebs cycle is also known as the citric acid cycle.
The electron transport chain is shown above. To the right, is the overall process of cellular respiration. The electron transport chain uses the high-energy electrons from the Krebs cycle to convert ADP into ATP.
