The population suffered immensely during the Great Terror of the 1930s, during which Stalin purged the party of 'enemies of the people', resulting in the execution of thousands and the exile of millions to the gulag system of slave labour camps.
Gulags, russian prison camps, were set up by Stalin. Russian citizens were sent there to be tortured when they went against any of his ideas.
Russian Gulags
Stalin became very paranoid and was willing to stop at nothing to get rid of anyone who he felt was threatening his power, even his own family members
Stalin, along with some of the men he trusted at the time, went on mass killing sprees known as purges within Russia. Many were murdered just because of suspision.
