The Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd of every year. It is a historic festival dated back to nearly 3,000 years ago. The holiday is primarily celebrated by Mexicans, where it is thought of as a National Holiday. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. They celebrate the deaths of their loved ones by maing altars and placing "ofrendas", or offerings of food such as pan de muertos baked in shapes of skulls or figures, candles, incense, yellow marigolds known as "cempazuchitl", and most importantly, a photo of the departed soul is placed on the altar. They celebrate this holiday because they want to mock death, and live alongiside him, instead of being sad all the time and crying. They also cry along with being happy, because the loss of a loved one is sad, but they try as hard as they can to maintain optimism.
