Does letting students choose their group matter?
Self-determination theory relates to the quality of human motivation. Factors that influence student motivation: 1. Autonomy Support 2. Intrinsic/Extrinsic Influences 3. Classroom Community These factors are seen as reasons why learners might pursue various academic tasks.
Collaborative Learning Groups
Core Beliefs: 1. Rapport 2. Examining Life 3. Nurturing Environment
COLLABORATIVE LEARNING: *Provides opportunities that are both social and academic *Effective means of increasing students’ knowledge and enjoyment of content *Studies show that collaborative learning generally facilitates student motivation and classroom community *Group formation is a component collaborative learning *Students are not always given a choice about how groups are formed.
This study used the self-determination theory to study the relationship between choice regarding group membership and student motivation within classrooms that use collaborative learning

But.... what is the self- determination theory?
Collaborative learning promotes classroom community Interpersonal relationships and peer connectedness promote positive experiences both in and out of the classroom
Measured by student perceptions that the teacher understands, cares about, and trusts the students *choices and options *self-determined agendas *fosters intrinsic motivation *interpersonal experiences
AUTONOMY SUPPORT
Motivation that is driven by interest or enjoyment in task itself Exists within the individual rather than relying on external pressure. Humans experience greater intrinsic motivation within a supportive environment that emphasises autonomy rather than control CHOICE facilitates intrinsic motivation
