She loved to feel the wind blowing on her face as she twisted and turned and flew across the stage. The bright lights would have blinded her if she wasn’t in such a euphoric state. The only sound that could be heard was the excessively loud music coming from the speakers located somewhere out in the audience. The only sight that was visible behind the blinding lights was that of silhouettes that either sat or stood watching her perform. Faster and faster, the music sped up and so did she. Turning and spinning, leaping and jumping, stretching and posing, until her final leap. She pushed off the ground with just enough force to make it seem as if gravity did not pertain to her anymore. There she stayed, in the air, in the perfect, beautiful, elongated, elegant pose until she gently drifted back down to earth. She placed her right foot behind her left and bowed to her audience. Cheering, whistles, clapping, screaming, and applauds came from the audience. The smile that hinted behind her lips started to make its presence known until she could no longer contain it. Everyone in the back row was able to see this radiant, illuminating smile. Her smile dazzled the audience and brought them to their feet, forcing them to cheer and applaud louder. The grand curtain was a deep red wave as it fell on the stage, making the girl disappear behind the sea. The stage lights dimmed until the theatre was black and then the room lights slowly turned on. The audiences waited until their eyes adjusted before they found the exit. Behind the curtain, the girl stood, center stage, staring at the curtain that had just taken her place. The smile slowly dissipated until it was no longer there and she began to feel light headed. Her head was spinning and she looked around for someone to help her. She reached her hand out towards one of her fellow ballerinas who seemed not to notice. For the first time that night, the girl did not seem graceful. She fell to the floor with a thud, causing everyone to pay attention, even the ballerina she had reached out to before. Swarms of people circled the girl lying on the floor, many with rags and water bottles, one with a portable fan, and another checking her pulse. Another ran to a nearby telephone and dialed 911 and impatiently yelled into the phone about the state in which the girl was in. An ambulance appeared not too long after and took the girl away. And so ended the short-lived dream of the young girl. And so ended the promising career of the young girl’s. And so ended her love for anything pertaining to the theatre. And so ended the vision of the young girl, no longer a child but nowhere near an adult.
