George Washington had his military debut in the French and Indian War in 1754. Lt. Gov. Robert Dinwiddie chose Washington to deliver an ultimatum to the French asking them to cease their intrusion in the Ohio River Valley. Washington also had to observe how strong the French forces were, and where their reinforcements were located. After Washington succeeded his mission, he was appointed lieutenant colonel and ordered to lead an emergency military force to protect the Ohio River Valley. In August of 1755, George Washington was appointed to command the Virginia regiment. With the British and French fighting in the west, Washington knew that this was going to be a difficult task. The French and British war was officially declared in May of 1756.
