-Son of notary -Attended to Jesuit College Louis-le-Grand -While in Bastille, he rewrote Oedipe and started his epic poem called Henriade. - Oedipe gained him fame and money which mad him a millionaire -In 1726, Voltaire was beaten by Chevalier de Rohan and was sent to Bastille. He was released from Bastille when he promised to go to England. -His book Letters Concerning the English Nation, characterized literature of the Enlightenment and that book was banned from France. -Was highly interested in science (worked on physics/chemistry experiments) -In 1758, he moved near French border where he met with great people, contributed to the Encyclopedia, and managed his estate.
Crusader against tyranny and bigotry. Voltaire popularized the science and philosophy of his age. His philosophical writings are considered ideology today. Outspoken on his ideas [defense of civil liberties, the right to a fair trial, &freedom of religion] regardless of social reform/strict censorship laws in France.
Wrote plays, poetry, novels, essays, historical/scientific works, 20,000+ letters & 2,000+ books/pamphlets.
