Important Vocabulary to Know
Essential Amino Acids: Amino acid that an animal can't synthesize and must obtain through food ingestion
E Coli: lives in the intestines on unabsorbed organic material
Peristalsis: alternating waves of contraction and relaxation in smooth muscles; moves and directs food
Alimentary canal: digestive tract consisting of a tube running between a mouth and an anus
Feces: waste of digestive tract
Mucus: mixture of glycoproteins, salts, cells, and water that moistens and protects the membrane lining of body cavities
Rectum: terminal portion of large intestine where feces are stored until eliminated
Duodenum: 1st section of small intestine where chyme from stomach mixes with digestive juices from pancrease, liver, and gallbladder
Pyloric Sphincter Valve: falp between the small intestine and stomach that regulates entry
Epiglottis: Flap that prevents food from entering trachea by covering glottis
