Important Vocabulary to Know
Antigen: macromolecule that ellicits an immune reponse by binding to B or T cells
Antibody: protein secreted by differentiated B cells that bind to a particular antigen (immunoglobulins)
Lymphocyte: type of white blood cell that mediates aquired immunity (B cells and T cells)
Leukocyte: A blood cell that functions in fighting infections (white blood cells)
Inflammatory response: the changes brought about by chemical signals released upon infection
Antibiotic: kill bacteria by inhibiting enzymes specific to that bacteria
Vaccine: harmless variant of a pathogen that stimulates a host's immune system to mount defenses against it
Macrophage: phagocytic cell, functions in innate immunity by destroying microbes and in aquired immunity as an antigen presenting cell.
Fever: systemic inflammatory response in which body temp. is raised by pryogens released from macrophages
Helper T Cell: type of T cell that secretes cytokines that promote response of B cells and cytotoxic T cells
Interferon: protein that has antiviral or immune regulatory functions.
Pathogen: organism or virus that causes a disease
