Stage One: Character lives an innocent life, uneventful life.- This is represented through Santiago when he is a humble fisherman just trying to make a living for himself.
Stage Three: Inition and facing the unknown.- Hero crosses a threshold into a new more dangerous world. Santigago represents this when he leaves the bay and enters into open water.
Stage Two: Departure- Hero called to adeventure; often relectantr but eventually goes. Santiago does this when he leaves the shore to fish.
Stage Four: Initiation/ Trials and Testing- Hero is given a great test and endures with strength. Santiago does this as he is battling the fish, he also represents this with the story of him arm wrestling the Negro.
Stage Five: The innermost cave/ final battle- Hero engages in final battle or ventures into the darkest region in his journey. This is represented by Santiago when he is in the final moments of catching the fish.
Stage 6: Return and reintergration into society- Hero returns to home often with more respect than when they left, sometimes brings peace back to the area. Santiago does this when he returns to the city and people see the skeleton of the fish and know what he put into it.
