The Confederates attacked the Union. Union was unprepared to fight but still ended up winning the battle. Johnston was killed in the fight. Confederates retreated back to Corinth.. In the end, it hurt Union for winning, 23,746 men died. More than half of these men were Union Soliders.
At the time it was fought, it was the bloodiest battle known.
General Johnston was shot indirectly and bled to death.
