REFORM
The American Colonization Society(1817) was founded by antislavery reformers from the North and the South. William Lloyd Garrison from MA. Founded the Liberator, and Anti-Slvaery Newspaper American Anti-Slavery Socitery(1833) was inspired by Britian. White and Black ablolitionist had met in Philadelphia in December. It was believed that the only way to achieve emancipation was by pushing abolitionism through polotics. The Liberty party was a party created to fight against this. Women were denied the right to vote, did not own propertu, and most did not have an occupation. Aneglina and Sarah Grimke and Abby Kelley had promoted, and fought for women's rights.
Temperance: - Against alcohol consumption. - Strogest of all reformation movements. - American Temperance Society (1826), founded to prevent alcholic consumption.
- Before the 1820s schooling was very informal - Workingmen's movment (1820s) started the demands for a tax free schooling system - Prisons, Workhouses, and Asylums were created to deal with social problems. - Utopians sought removal from society - Shakers - Communism
Sabbatarian Movement: - Evangelicals led by Lyman Beecher - They formed the General Union for Promiting the Observance if Christian Sabbath. - Helped to promote religion, - Their first act was going up against the government for having mail sent on Sundays.
Women: - Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children in New York (1797) had started reform for women. - Morally Motivatied - Groups were formed to widen the public actions of women.
The Benevolent Empire: - People coformed to the Puritan and Fedealist values. - The Second Great Awakening was underway. - Protestant reformers had also sent out speakers on daily routes to help the reform. - With the new speedy priting process more religious papers started to pop up and spread out around the US.
Conspiracies of benvolence had started to pop up. - it was believed that the Protestant reformers were said to have lied. - The Mormon Church had taken the most Backlash
