In the early 1970s, many trends became popular among women. Of these trends included mini skirts, maxi dresses, halter neck catsuits and/or dresses, flared dress pants, and stretchy disco wear. Some patterns with these trends could be found in exotic tropical print, diamond check, and floral print designs. With the numerous fashions that boomed for women in the early 1970s, some people thought of these styles as an exploitation rather then a liberation for women.
Into the mid and late 70s, ethnic trends once again made their way into mainstream fashion. Styles in places such as India, Africa, and China had become popular in the early 60s, but fashions from Spain and Greece were also becoming more popular. Ethnic influence became so popular that the smallest and farthest places had taken effect.
In the 1970s, jewelry was a main part of the fashion culture. 70s jewelry included friendship bracelets, bangles, big retro earrings, hoop earrings, mood rings, chokers, cocktail rings, clamper bracelets, pins and/or broaches, beaded necklaces, medallions, and other types of Bohemian jewelry. Other accessories included large shapeless shoulder bags, otherwise known as hobo bags, and drawstring bags, which were usually made of woven material, and headbands.
Mens fashions were also an important part of 70s fashion. It included bellbottom jeans, polyester knit suits, big ties, t-shirts, corduroy jeans, pea coats, and large, patchwork belts. Other clothing materials included patchwork leather and velvet. The men in the 70s were also known to wear plaid, paisley, and geometric patterns.
Hair and shoes were one of the biggest influences of fashion. Men and women often had long, straggely hair in the early 70s, and in the mid to late 70s hair was more perfectly shaped and coiffed. Another popular hair style was the large afro, Farrah Fawcett flippy bangs, and the Dorothy Hamel short hairstyle. The shoes that were most popular in the 1970s included wedged heels for women, platform heels for both men and women, as well as clogs. Chukka boots were another popular type of unisex shoe.
