The Hollow Men ''This is how the world ends This is how the world ends This is how the world ends Not with a bang but with a wimper''
The first section of the poem starts with two epigraphs. The first one is "Mistah Kurtz-he dead." This is a quote from Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. In the novel "Mistah Kurtz” signifies the lost, violent barbarian of the typical "hollow man." The second epigraph is "A penny for the Old Guy." This refers to the English children on Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes planned to blow up houses of Parliament, and for this he was hanged and burned. On his execution day the children made straw dolls of Fawkes and begged for pennies to buy fireworks.
