1 & 2 Timothy
Pastoral Letters
Discuss matters of concern to the pastor of a church. Fidelity & Order.
First Timothy
Paul leaves Timothy in change of Ephesus while he goes to Macedonia. After Paul realized he might not be coming back, he wrote a letter to Timothy giving him basic instructions on how to run the community. The main things Paul wanted Timothy to do was to refute false teachings, supervise the growing communities affairs, and appoint qualified church leaders.
Bishops- Greek for episcopos ''means overseer'' and ''guardian'' They had authority over a region of christian churches.
Elders- Greek for presbyteros. Priest came from this word and so did the denomination, Presbytarian.
Deacon- Handled finances of early church and provided service to widows, orphans, and others in need.
Church Structure
Women
In Galatians, when he says that, '' There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer, slave or free, there is no longer male and female. For all your are one in Christ Jesus."
In 1 Timothy his words portrayed his view on women as being subservient and of lower status. This view, to some, seems to drown out his more powerful words.
