Plessy Vs Ferguson {1896} Separate but Equal.
Presidential Election of Barack Obama {2008} This was an incredible turning point in the US because Obama is the first black president. He is looked to as an inspiration for equality. His term Starts January 20th 2009. Even Jesse Jackson. a great helper in the Civil Rights Movement, cried when Obama was elected president.
Brown vs Board of Education {1954} Linda Brown was a young black girl who lived near an all white school. She had to walk alone to a school bus 7 blocks from her home. She was threatened and followed by an angry white mob. She was part of the Little Rock Nine. Her Court case was a key turning point throughout the Civil Rights Movement. In Topeka, Kansas, Thurgood Marshall from the NAACP helped Segregate schools.
Thurgood Marshall was 1st black supreme Court Justice who helped pass the Brown vs. Board court case. This man was a major contributor and leader to the NAACP. {1946}
Rosa Parks Bus-seating violation {1955} Mrs. Parks started the Montgomery Bus boycott. She was known as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement.
Little Rock Nine {1957} These nine black teens went to the Supreme Court. They got a law passed to desegregate schools. They went to a school later on and were denied access from going into the school.
Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. {1968} Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an extraordinary man. He was an inspriration to the people of America. He was one of the Main leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. He was a peaceful man who believed in non violence. He had a lot of supporters in his non violent protests for Civil Rights of all people.
Voting Acts {1965} 15th Amendment states that everyone has the right to vote. This Amendment was hated by the Southern White Landowners because they didn't want any of the blacks voting. They all got together to make voting for blacks difficult by creating the Jim Crow Laws. These were ridiculous laws to prevent voting for minorities.
Civil Rights Acts {1964} JFK and his right hand man decided that they would slowly segregate America. This would prevent lynching, violence, and protests.
March On Washington {1963} Over 200,000 people showed up to support the protest in Washington DC. This was the most impacting protest. Martin Luther King Jr. gave almost a 20 minute speech on why Blacks should have rights. In the last few minutes he spoke from his heart leaving the impact that would be known til today...the I HAVE A DREAM speech.
Freedom Rides {1961} There was a program called CORE which was the COngress of Racial Equality. This group wanted to make a statement by sending 13 people from DC to Louisiana in 1961. They were doing well unitl they arrived in Alabama. In Amniston, Alabama their bus was hit with dynamite so they had to get off the bus and all were beaten by a white mob. Finally they had to ban the freedom Rides because it was too dangerous.
Black Power Movement {1966} This helped self-esteem and racial pride for the black people of America. This movement was started by Stokley Carmichael. Because of this the Black Panter Party was started by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton.
