Spell Check programs are helpful to a writer because they are designed to correct grammatical errors. However, although a spell checker catches and corrects typographical errors, it will generally not fix homonyms or replace a word based on a sentence’s context. Sometimes spell check even errs with seemingly correct tense shifts. For example: “He lies and I lay on the grass together.” Lay is past tense while lies is in the present form.
2. Also Spell Check can overlook when a word should be possessive . --> It's, for example, is the contraction '' It is.'' Yet, Its, is the possessive of ''it.'' If one is not sure which form to use, it is better to spell out the contraction ''it is.'' 3. Furthermore, when one is talking about himself/herself and someone else, he/she should be careful to use ''I'' and ''me'' correctly because Spell Check can occasionally miss these errors.
4. Spell can wrong the intentions of words. --> For instance, to spell check, infer and imply are similar. Nonetheless, When you imply, you express something. When you infer, you understand something.
Most common types of spell check errors: 1. Here are some homonyms that Spell Check interchanges: to, two, too.....here, hear, here.....their, there, they're.....your and your're. (Homonyns are words with the similar spelling and pronunciation but with differenct meanings.)
Deadly Sin #6 : Spell Check Errors
Wright: I feel bad. today Wrong: I fell badly today.
Part of the evil sin of relying on Spell Check is believing in its fake sense of grammatical security. Here is a excerpt from a Spell Checked Poem: Eye halve a spelling checker It came with my pea sea, It plainly marks four my revue Miss-steaks eye kin knot sea.
By Christopher Mendoza
As much as spell check tries to be a professional human grammar critic, it can never replace human judgemenmt. So the best thing to do is use spell check to fix general problems, and then PROOFREAD, or even doubly re-read your piece before printing it.
A checker is a bless sing; It freeze yew lodes of thyme. It helps me right awl stiles two reed, And aides me when aye rime.
