Hugo Chavez

Start of Dictatorship: 1999-Present Chavez and other men tried to get Perez out of office, but failed. Chavez then went to jail for his actions. When he talked about what happened on tv, people agreed with his actions. This is what led to his election as president.

As of today, Hugo Chavez is still a dictator of Venezuela.
* In 1999, a new constitution was approved. This gave presidents a lot more power. * Chavez won the Organization of American States (OAS) and Carter Center certification of the national election of December 2006 with 63% of the vote. * On February 15, 2009, Chavez won a referendum to eliminate term limits, allowing him to govern indefinitely.
