Spanish conquests in Mexico and
the Conquistadors
Hernando Cortes
Balboa
In 1519 Hernando landed on the shores of Mexico. He colonized several Carribean islands. Once the Spanish turned their attention to the American mainland, Cortes marched inland to claim new land for Spain.
Cortes and the many other Spanish explorers who followed him were known as Conquistadors. Balboa was one of them.
The spanish were the first European settlers in the Americas. Conquistadors carved out colonies in regions that would become Mexico, South America and the United States.
Many of the conquistadors and those who followed the Catholic Church forced the natives to convert to Christianity.
