Margaret Beaufort
Margaret Beaufort lived through one of the most turbulent times in English history, the War of the Roses. She was born on May 31, 1443, to John Beaufort, the first Duke of Somerset, and Margaret Beachamp. Margaret was married to Edmund Tudor, the Earl of Richmond at twelve, and had her son, Henry Tudor, after Edmund died, at the age of thirteen. She was the granddaughter of John of Gaunt, the former Duke of Landcaster, which gave her a claim to the English throne. She was a highly intelligent woman who politically maneuvered her son on to the throne. She did this by having him marry Elizabeth of York,, which garunteed him a claim to the throne, and subsequently ended the War of the Roses. He became Henry VII when he was crowned the king of England on October 30, 1485. She was very well educated. She helped found two colleges and professerships, and was a patron of the Early English Press. Margaret Beaufort died on June 29th, 1509, just two months after her son. She is buried in Westminster Abbey, near the tomb of her son.
