Control of Breathing Rate in Humans
What controls the breating rate in humans? Well, networks of neurons regulate breathing. They are called breathing control centers and are located in the two brain regions: the MEDULLA OBLONGATA and the PONS.
Neurons in the Pons regulate the breathing tempo.
The control circuts in the Medulla establish a breathing rythm.
When one breaths deeply, a negtive-feedback mechanism prevents the lungs from over-expanding. During inhilation, sensors detect the stretching of the lung tissue, and send nerve impulses to the control circuts in the medulla, which further inhibit inhilation.
