The Buzz: The Effects of Smoking on Respiration
What else does smoking damage? Smoking damages the epithelial cells in the windpipe leading to smoker's cough. Emphysema is the body's immune response to smoking. It causes the loss of lung function and debilitating disease.
What does smoking do to the lungs? Smoking damamges the cilia in the lungs and respiratory system that are responsible for sweeping away dust and foreign material. When they are damaged by smoking, they are unable to sweep away the foreign material and it gets trapped in the mucus membrane of the lungs and builds up, leading to lung problems.
