Nuclear Warfare By: Claire O'Connor
The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima I nuclear incident). The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles, crippling the Soviet economy.(see typed exert for further info.)

INTRO: When you hear the term Nuclear, you usually think GIANT BOMB. But, there is more to it than that. Nuclear Bombs have been used in wars, but Nuclear POWER is being used to fuel the country. There are also enviornmental, Power, and War concerns associated with Nuclear power, and that is what I will be discussing today.

Chernobyl after disaster
Extra, Extra!! Countries are trying to harness nuclear power to fuel attacks against U.S.!!!! The use of nuclear energy is depleating the planet of life and natural resources!!
According to Mark Z. Jacobson, the growth of nuclear power has "historically increased the ability of nations to obtain or enrich uranium for nuclear weapons, and a large-scale worldwide increase in nuclear energy facilities would exacerbate this problem, putting the world at greater risk of a nuclear war or terrorism catastrophe". (see notes on seperate sheet of paper)
The nuclear power debate is about the controversy which has surrounded the deployment and use of nuclear fission reactors to generate electricity from nuclear fuel for civilian purposes. People for nuclear energy argue that nuclear power is a sustainable energy source which reduces carbon emissions and can increase energy security if its use supplants a dependence on imported fuels. They also beleive that nuclear power produces virtually no air pollution, in contrast to the chief viable alternative of fossil fuel. They believe that nuclear power is the only viable course to achieve energy independence for most Western countries. They emphasize that the risks of storing waste are small and can be further reduced by using the latest technology in newer reactors, and the operational safety record in the Western world is excellent when compared to the other major kinds of power plants.
Chernobyl Disaster
During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States conducted two atomic bombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, the first on August 6, 1945 and the second on August 9, 1945. These two events are the only active deployments of nuclear weapons in war to date. (See sheet for Bombing details as well as the nuclear crisis in Japan today)
