Plato:: Art is a distraction from the real purpose in life; finding truth in the forms.
Aristotle: Art imitates action. It imitates reality only once removed. It is also cathartic. The person looking at art can get the emotions from the art without having to experience those emotions first hand giving them more time to concentrate on finding truth.
Marx felt that artistic impulse is a natural and necessary expression of human nature, BUT it has been corrupted by capitalism and propoganda.
Marcuse Art represents the past- a promise of past happiness. So, we would want to change back to better times. Talking 'bout a Revolution!!!
