Characters In These Events Napoleon- Josef Stalin Squealer- Pravda or the newspaper that worked as a propoganda organ of the party. All the Other Animals- Proletariat or the working class.
In Animal Farm, Napoleon uses Squealer to throw out propaganda to cover up mistakes that Napoleon makes. Squealer constantly uses propaganda stories in Animal Farm to cover-up for the flaws that are made by the pigs. An example is when Squealer and Napoleon use propaganda to cover-up for the first collapse of the windmill. Napoleon tells the other animals that it was Snowball who was plotting againist them and had destroyed the windmill. Another prime example was towards the end of the book when Squealer again had to make up a story when Boxer hurt himself working. The animals went to say goodbye to Boxer they noticed that the side of the van taking him away was labeled, horse slaughterer. Squealer had to then cover-up Napoleon's mistake by telling the animals that the sticker on the van hadn't been changed. These events show the propaganda used in Animal Farm.
In the real life, the Soviet Union officials were also making propaganda statements and remarks to the public. Officials claimed that to make a perfect communist state they would have to sacrifice a lot. The people were told to work harder and give more to the Soviet union in order to form this perfect state. Along with the officials, many artists were hired to make propaganda paintings. These paintings and posters were hung around Russia and convinced people that this was what to do was to sacrifice to help the communist state. This is the parallel of Squealer's propaganda used in Animal Farm.
This is an example of what art propaganda was during the Russia's change to a communist government. "SNOWBALL! Snowball has done this thing!" This happened when Napoleon blamed Snowball for the fall of the first windmill because the walls were too thin.
This is a anti-communist propaganda painting "I do not believe that," Boxer said. "Did we not give him Animal Hero, First Class, immediately after?" (After the Battle of Cowshed) This Quote shows how Boxer doesn't believe Napoleon that snowball would do such things. Meaning that Boxer is representing the anti- communist people of the Soviet Union.
This is another propaganda portrait from the Russian Revolution ''I will work harder!'' This is what Boxer said after he fell for Napoleon's propaganda that if he worked harder than everything would become more successful, like the windmill.
