(Serafini, continued)... Without proper effective staff development or teacher initiative, assessment programs are doomed to failure. We need assessment to UNDERSTAND student thinking. Oral reading analyses are used as guides to observe, describe, analyze, and record a student's oral reading processes. Thinkalouds provide an excellent window to student oral reading processes.
ASSESSMENT
A good assessment system consists of screening, progress monitoring, and diagnostics
Dr. Mary Howard:
Assessment should: Efficient, ongoing, noncompetitive, contextually grounded, fair and valid, have results shared with students/parents/other teachers, be used appropriately, and be balanced with other assessments (not just one measure). Some classroom assessments need to provide a window into the student mind to see how they are processing new information. Informal assessment is a means of gathering data from three sources: artifacts, observations, and interactions. We need to INCLUDE STUDENTS in the assessment process.
Dr. Frank Serafini:
Assessment must help children learn more effectively
Assessment must help teachers teach more effectively
Assessment must help teachers articulate their understandings of learners and learning to external audiences.
Assessment must be efficient
