Element MERCURY -Period: 6 -Family: 12 -Color: Silvery-white -Transition Metal
The element mercury is LIQUID at room temperature.
The element mercury is not diatomic because it is found as only one single atom.
Element mercury is important because we use mercury in thermometers--mercury is the measuring fluid. Also, temperatures could be recorded well above water's boiling point and below its freezing point. Mercury also allows the degrees to be marked more accurately in finer subdivsions.
Mecury's chief ore is cinnabar.
Uses of MERCURY: >Thermometers >Barometers >Fluorscent lamps >Batteries >Diffusion pumps >Mercury switches >Amalgams >Sphygmomanometers >Manometers >Liquid-mirror Telescopes > Etc.
