Charlemagnes rule lasted from 768 to 814. He was referred to as the light of the dark ages. He conquered most of western Europe and converted many of its pagan people to Christianity. Those who chose to remain faithful to their own religion were killed. Things that were declined such as art afte the fall of the Roman empire were revived by Charlemagne. He stimulated a notable cultural revival, and initiated reform of church and society, the continuation of military success was the central fact of Charlemagne's reign. Pope Leo III named Charlemagne Emperor of the Romans. From that point on, Charlemagne and his successors were given the title Holy Roman Emperor.

King Charlemagne was given the name Charles I or Charles the Great. He was born in born April of 747 in Northern Germany. He had very little book learning and never could read or write. Charlemagne was born into greatness, his father Pippin the short was an official serving of the Merovingian king and the mayor of the palace. Charlemagne participated in his fathers courtceived practical training for leadership. When Pippin deposed the last king of Merovingian, he became king of the Franks. AfterPipins death, Charlemagne and his brother Carloman were proclaimed King and they ruled together until Carlomans death in 771. Charlemagne then became ruler of the entire kingdom.

Charlemagne defeated the Lombard kingdom in northern Italy and made himself king of the Lombards. He then turned his attention to the Saxons, a group of pagan tribes in central Germany. By 777 he had defeated the Saxons in several battles and converted large numbers of them to Christianity. He established an extensive library and founded an academy for educating young Frankish knights. He promoted religion and morality and made strong efforts to produce an educated clergy. He also established a system of justice in which nobles and clergymen traveled about the kingdom hearing court cases and bringing the law to every town and village. His reign is often referred to as the Carolingian Renaissance because of the flourish of scholarship, literature, and architecture. He restored Roman civilization, Christianity, and the Germanic Traditions.

Last Years
In 806, Charlemagne took measures to provide for the succession of his empire, he divided his realm among his three sons. Louis (the least warlike) was left sole power of the empire. He was crowned King in 813 by his father. The last few years of Charlemanges reign were tough times. Civil disobedience increased and there were troubles on the frontiers. It was becoming an era of crisis and deline all over again. He died, while fasting, on Jan. 28, 814, and was buried at his palace at Aachen. Louis eventually didn't do justice to the empire, so the empire was lost.
Charlemagne historically was a remarkable influence on the evolution of Europe in the late 700's and early 800's. He was the greatest of medieval emperors; for his dedication and commitment to his people, he was definitely recognized. He immensely expanded his empire across Europe, mainly uniting the Christian lands of Western Europe establishing the power of the church. Many successful military conquests were made during his rule. These conquests of Charlemagne not only defended his family and his empire, but also laid the foundation for the development of a new political entity, the German State.
